The Pattern of Life: A guided tour in the London Aquarium
Saturday 25th February 2012
An afternoon tour discovering the wonders of the underwater world, as revealed in some of Europe's most colourful and spectacular aquatic displays, including three-storey oceanic tanks.

We investigate the biology & behaviour of the different kinds of fish; discover their adaptations to different niches; and ask why some are dull whilst others brightly coloured.

Orange Clownfish, Amphiprion percula
with symbiotic Magnificent Anemone, Heteractis magnifica

Masked Butterflyfish, Chaetodon semilarvatus
swimming over a gorgonian (sea fan)

Overall, we will investigate whether the pattern of life conforms to Darwin's model of a gently branching tree; and, if not, how modern biologists explain what we observe.
